I want to build a cheap file server (samba and NFS) with more than 600 GB so I need to install another IDE card to add the extra drives. An experiment with "no-name" pci IDE card failed because it was identified as USB and not IDE. The system is RH 7.3, kernel 2.4.18-4 (it now serves 330 GB - LVM of 3 x 120 GB).
I have 2 questions: 1. Anybody has experience with 2 or more IDE cards on Linux ? 2. I want to add software RAID (RAID-5 when I have 6 or 7 drives), will it work (performance wise), how much memory should I add (it is 512 MB now) ?
