I assume there is no tty defined before you login into the system.
Try to do stty -a (add sleep after it to stop the scrolling) and
see what it outputs (I suspect you'll get "stty: standard input:
Inappropriate ioctl for device" or another error).

You can always add \r before each \n and it will surely solve this
particular problem.
I'm running bash scripts from both /etc/inittab and /etc/init.d/, and
I don't see this problem (it ran/runs on Red Hat from 6.0 to 8.0).
