It shows "idle", and I tried to send the test print from the CUPS web interface - the print job was automatically aborted. I found I can do lpr <some-text-file> and it prints it. I think the problem is that CUPS is trying to send a PS test file, and this printer probably can't accept raw PS (it's not a laser printer). What handles the translation from PS to the format known by the printer? Is the hpijs driver?
