As the comment in XF86Config-4 says, the numbers are from the monitor's manual 
- that's what I meant by being on the safe side. In fact, your right that the 
manual also says that the monitor can handle more - [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 
[EMAIL PROTECTED] So maybe I should manually chose 75 in the Mandrake setup. 

As far as your explanation of the modeline is concerned - thanks - I'll read 
what you wrote and the documentation you recommended and see what I can 
learn.
