The following is just my general knowledge. I didn't have to deal with
this problem.
1. What?
NTFS is a file system (fs). NTFS resizing is making the area of the
HD which is occupied by NTFS different then what was initially
defined. Usually you are making it shorter then what was before the
resizing in order to create some contiguous space for other things.
2. How?
The resizing can be made with special programs that were designed for
that purpose. Alon was suggesting ntfsresize.
3. Win xp support?
It is supported by win xp in the sense that if the resize process
succeeds then win xp will not be aware that something has been
changed. Whether you can run the resizing software from within win xp
depends on which resizing software you are using.
4. Awareness.
The Most important consideration is that you can loose data or even
the entire win xp installation, either because of a human error when
using the software or because of bugs. Having backup is recommended.
Having some means to install the win xp and whatever other
applications and data you have from scratch is also recommended. It
could be that these precautions are too strict but it is not my data
that I am writing about and I haven't got experience with any NTFS
resizing software.
Other then that you might want to plan ahead how much space will
you give to win xp. There are other considerations, like whether to
divide the HD to different partitions so that different directories
in the Linux installation will live on different partitions. However
I believe that usually these other considerations are of lesser
importance for a first time installers.
