Are you by any chance using the nVidia-supplied drivers or any other kind
of frame buffer acceleration? I had problems with machines that were using
them getting stuck like that, and when I cancelled my nVidia drivers at
home, and switched to a non-FB configuration, it solved the problem. My
machine since then has not got stuck once.
