On GO-Linux I met a few people at the Perl Mongers booth who came with all kinds of arguments about how Python will kill Perl or how PHP won the battle over Perl in the Web field. It was very frustrating and it took me some time to think about the right answer:

Yes, of course.

but we are still here, well and kicking.
While you are busy proving the techincal superiority of PHP and/or Python [1] I'd like to take a look at our communities.

While I don't know much about the Israeli PHP and the Python community
I know a bit about ours. I hope others will tell us about their community. I think we can learn from each other.

What I know is that the Perl community in Israel is very lively and is growing by the day. I could go into details here but I actually gave a presentation about it on our meeting after GO-Linux so you can look up the details on the slides.[2] In short, based on a census I ran in the first week of April, we are one of the strongest Perl communities already.[3]

If I am not mistaken then we are also the first OS/FS group in Israel that is organizing a full-day, technology oriented conference on volunteer work. [4] Please correct me if I am mistaken.

So I would like to take this opportunity and invite everyone to join the Israeli Perl Mongers. We are meeting monthly, giving a few presentations and discussing technical issues.[5]

In addition I'd like to invite you to our conference that will take place on 11th May in Haifa University. [4]

(I send furhter details in a separate mail not to mix with this subject)
