We did get a bunch of interesting CVs, and the most
interesting/promising of the bunch were invited to take a written test
that we wrote. I've never used tests before, but we did so at my
COO's suggestion, and I am very happy with the results. We now have
an excellent indicator of what people know about Web/database
programming on Unix using a variety of languages.

Remember that as a service company, technical knowledge is only 50
percent of the equation -- so someone who aces the test might not
necessarily be the best candidate. We definitely don't need the
stereotypical hacker attitude when working with clients.

But suffice it to say that there *are* good, experienced people in
Israel who are looking for work -- and some of them have a great deal
of experience.

Which candidate is a good match for my company's current needs is a
good question, and we're going to be inviting the strongest people
back to talk with us some more before we make any decisions. We
definitely have a number of people to choose from, however; by no
means is there only one serious candidate for the position.

Reuven
