We don't really know if it doesn't fail. The return value may be:
        - Different from stdout (your assumption)
        - Or just NULL (failure of some sort)

Maybe saving it and printing it with errno [and strerror(errno) of
course] would give us a hint.

I must admit I do suspect you were right in your guess this is just a stupid assumption of the test suite, however it looks like this test suite should have passed on many OS (if we talk about the "official" X11 test suite) so it is indeed a mystery.



Indeed. the code works on IRIX for example. I just checked... :-)
