How about this:
* a system daemon that checks the amount of available memory on the system and when needed and possible create additional swap files and mount them (trade disk space for virtual memory). when the system has planty of free memory, unmount and remove unneeded swap files (free disk space).


I think this would be a really useful little utility that would be even picked up by major distros - unless there is already something like this and I simply failed to grasp the truth.
