There were a few posts on this subject on the last 2 years. I personally used both PCTel-based and Conexant-based modems without too much work. I think Conexant was better, IIRC. I don't think there is any WinModem that would work out of the box on most distros - be prepared to compile your module and probably your kernel too. I suggest that you try to get as many details as possible before actually buying the modem - that is, its exact model (usually won't be very useful) and the exact model of its chipset (that is, whatever is written on its main chip).
