Hi to all,
For those who are not familiar with Haifux instaparties - here's a short
introduction:
As usual, every academic semester or two academic semesters, we have
a Linux installation party in the Technion, dedicated, but (ofcourse!) not
only, to people who arrive from Haifa and north area, to show and spread
Linux to the people. The Linux instaparty involves many activities that
mainly include Linux installations (you bring your box, we install Linux
in it), and series of lectures (how to use your new Linux box, how to
configure it, etc.). In addition to that, we also hold the Welcome to
Linux series which is a series of lectures for beginners and for advanced
ones (how to be your own computer's admin, Hebrew, development tools, and
more). The W2L series holds 5-7 lectures with different subjects mentioned
above, and they are given in a period of a month up to a month and a half
(exact details will be announced as soon as we are settled with the
dates). By the way - everything is free and volunteered - the entrance,
the installations, the lectures, and anything else which involves the
instaparty and the W2L series activities.
ON MONDAY, 25th of August, we will hold a special meeting of Haifux club
about the organization of the upcoming Linux party. We will mainly discuss
about the following topics: advertisement (in the newspapers, forums, city
blocks, etc.), the wanted date (we will not hold the instaparty before
the middle of November. That's when all spring and summer semesters tests are
done), things that you think that we should do (ideas), and how to do
them, who are going to be the installers, and MUCH more. After all that,
we will start sharing the missions between the people. A group of people will
be in charge to implement a specific topic (for instance - advertising in the
forums, or, setting up the place for the installations, etc.), and will need
to update us when things are done.
One of the missions which will take special care is the advertisement
part, which I believe that can be done much better and much wider (I am
talking about advertising in Haifa area, and not only in academic places
and "known" Linux places, where it is already known and there's no new
crowd from there), and to make a bigger instaparty, which means that we
will probably need to replace the regular place (Rifkin) to a bigger place
(Bet Hastudent of the Technion, for instance). The more people who will
cooperate - the better it will be. We need many working and thinking
heads, so if you think (and want) to volunteer - the next meeting is for
you. You can also email me if you can't arrive to the meeting.
By the way - I haven't mentioned this subject on purpose - choosing a
distribution. This subject WILL NOT be discussed during the organization
meeting next Monday. It will be discussed in emails ONLY. The reason is that
once we start discussion this (very hot) topic, it usually involves a little
religious war and we miss other things which we need to discuss about, and we
start losing our time for irrelevant flames.
If you wish to raise your opinion about ANY distribution (Mandrake 9.1 vs.
Redhat 9.0 vs. the rest of the world) - your only chance to do it is by
email, to me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) - until next Monday (25/8). In the
meeting, the chosen distribution will be told. Many criterias will be taken,
such as the kernel, ease of installation, choice of packages, and more
criteries which I can't think of the moment. Feel free to raise your
opinion about anything. If you choose to email me - please read the next
paragraph.
If you wish to send your ideas (any idea) also in email, and for any related
Linux party or W2L series email, PLEASE email me ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
with the subject: 'Haifux Linux Party', so I won't erase your email by mistake
(it can happen).
If you have any interesting idea to share - the interesting ideas will be
discussed during the meeting and also afterwards.
The people who organize these activities this year is Meir Maor, Alon
Altman, Etzion Bar-Noy, Orna Agmon and me (Adir Abraham).
I wish you all a pleasent instaparty and a Welcome to Linux series, and
I'm looking forward to hear from you.
Best regards.
