Theoretically, announcements of new software products should spread
over the year, and not falling together; Contrary to the myth, there is
no way to synchronize your plans with your competitor, because some
plans are secret, some others are not known even to their own
developers, some are planned a lot of time in advance and you can't
blame their planner for trying to synchronize with anybody, there are a
lot of "baltams" - such as delays in the development, bugs of the last
minute, etc.

Nevertheless, sometime there is a short time (about a month) with so
many announcements - like it was a year and not a month; Such time is
expected soon. If you want me to specify a date, I would say "Oct. 1,
plus-minus 20 days":

1. New release from RedHat (happens about twice per a year).
2. New release from Mandrake (happens about twice per a year).
3. "Orion" - a new package from Sun, that replaces the current OS;
Instead of buying Solaris separately, Web Application Server
   separately, messaging/collaboration system separately, compilers
separately, etc., you can but everything together. Although the
number of the core OS hasn't changed (Solaris 9), it is a new OS,
with a new GUI (GNOME!), etc. Sun calls it "Sun One", and it's a
   real revolution.
4. GNOME 2.4.
5. Samba 3.0: finally removes the gap that was opened by Microsoft.
6. Microsoft: Well, here comes a real blitz, so take a deep breath and
sit in convenience: Office 2003, Project 2003, Visio 2003,
SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and a lot of other products.
Everything in one month - October. I don't remember such a dramatic
   announcement from Microsoft.
7. OpenOffice 1.1.

Although the summer is going to end, things are getting hotter, and no
matter if it's Linux, Sun, or even Microsoft - it's always good for the
users.
