Have him try to temporarily put an IDE disk in the machine, install Linux, make sure he has the SATA loadable modules in place, mount the SATA disk and copy everything over. He'd probably need to rebuild his initrd to have the drivers load on boot time. I've never tried it, but I do know that Mandrake 9.1 doesn't come with SATA drivers compiled in.
