Did you try checking for bad blocks using dd if=/dev/hda9 of=/dev/null ?I did now.

To me, the "bad sector" theory doesn't add up. There are no errors reported from the IDE driver, dd does not encounter problems, there is no data corruption that I can detect. The error message suggests a race condition, and the frequency and reproducability of the error, to me, seem to encourage that suggestion.
