Check out your favorite dictionary or encyclopedia what a "patent" means,
or at least what it was supposed to mean before unscrupulous companies
started using it to destroy the free market.

For example, quoting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent

 "... The term patent originates from the term to patent which means to lay
  open (to public inspection) ... Per the word's original definition, one
  widely accepted social goal of patents is to induce the inventor to
  disclose knowledge for the advancement of society in exchange for a
  limited period of exclusivity."

So, choose - trade secrets or a patent. You can't have your cake and eat it
too.
