I have a 7000-based card (Hercules 3D Prophet) -- so far I've got nothing but agony from it. No closed-source driver (ATI only supports the more recent Radeons), and the open ones are lacking (though things are improving in XF86 4.4RC2.) For TV-out support you might want to try the Gatos project (http://gatos.sf.net) -- they're trying to make it work (I never tested it myself yet).
