you should enter into kde as root or run kdm configurator via kdesu

I managed with pressing the "Administrator Mode" at the bottom and typing my password.

there you should go to conf->admin-> choose login manager, and in sessions edit all the sessions u need. there is some config. file that can be edited by hand: it should be located in $KDE/share/config/kdm/ and named kdmrc edit it , search for "Session" word

That did it. I did find this tab before I asked, but couldn't figure out what I should add there and whether it's relevant. Looking at that file I found that I should have added "gnome-session". Not that it does much good - it enters gnome without even a window manager, but at least it enters gnome.

On the other hand, apparently I did something else which screwed up
the kdmrc file and prevented KDE itself from logging in. Luckily I had
a copy of the working kdmrc laying around which saved my evening.

Lessons:

1. Add "gnome-session" if you want to try gnome.
2. Keep a copy of kdmrc around
(btw, after installing kde I had to set AuthDir in that
file to /dev/null instead of /var/lib/kdm in order to let
the login process succeed, it's a known Debian bug).

I suppose I can switch to GDM but would like to avoid having to do that
every timeI switch environment.

BTW - switching to GDM didn't do any good - it still logged in to my KDE session.

Thanks for everyone who answered.

Cheers,
