I guess microsoftism is contagious :-) I think you are well aware that there some people (not a lot I admit), that do not use Debian for their production servers, either stable or unstable. some of them use other Linux distros or even <gasp> non-Linux operating systems !?! > It's strange because: > > 1. Debian's PHP4 package depends on Apache1. Who cares - Mandrake's don't. Mandrake has a mod_php package of which you need to get the appropriate version for your server (both apache1 and 2 are available), and packages for other PHP interfaces seperatly (cgi, cli). in fact - you can have PHP installed w/o any web server around (astonishing concept, I know - a web development language w/o a web server? who wouldv'e thought!). > 2. I hope you mean "January 2003" ? this was more then a year ago. I would like to think open source moves a bit faster then a minor release every 3 years (see Microsoft above). in ancient 2.0 history there was some problem with PHP, but it has long since been resolved. the problem was, BTW, not with the threading model, IIRC, but with the new "filter" concept. currently PHP can be used both as OUTPUT as well as INPUT filter on Apache 2. > I'd rather try to avoid > sticking non-.deb > software on my system Quite understandable notion. see above "updating a production server" discussion, specifically Shachar Shemesh's last post - to continue the same line: I say - if your distro does not allow you to install the software you need w/o stepping outside the main package repository, replace your distro - Mandrake has plenty to offer ;-) - -- Oded ::.. my last cable pulled dreams fade -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFARvkhkVGtsPJNwAYRAlAUAJ4zcRoftzNm8InUQ1AY37UGSe7EBwCeK3j3 zQjsSA5KIhQHpudS2ZJvmq4= =wpTT -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ================================================================To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
