Linux installation: stock Fedora Core release 1 (Yarrow), kernel 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl, with Hebrew working out of the box (the only customization which I needed to make it work in Hebrew was to add export LC_CTYPE=he_IL and setxkbmap).
OpenOffice: version 1.1 RC3, file OpenOffice-RC3-Linux.bin, 79797133 bytes long.
The installation already contained OpenOffice version 1.1.0-6.
The X server is XFree86, display resolution is 1024x768.
Findings:
1. The installation software doesn't locate JRE (known problem for RH 9 and later), even though I installed j2re-1_4_2_04-linux-i586.rpm downloaded (as *.rpm.bin) from www.java.com.
2. The installer's dialog windows are too large relative to the screen size.
3. While the installer displayed Hebrew properly (when I ran it in locale LANG="he_IL"), the software itself didn't locate installed Hebrew fonts.
4. The default installation directory which the installer proposed was /root/oo-something - which was not acceptable to me.
5. After installation, the README and README.html files contain no usable text.
Questions:
1. How to make OpenOffice 1.1 RC3 work with Culmus fonts installed in Fedora Core release 1?
2. Is it possible to make it work with the installed JRE after installation was completed?
3. Exactly to which executables should I point the menu pane shortcuts for OpenOffice applications?
Note: I can afford to experiment with unstable versions of OpenOffice, hence the choice of RC3.
