Mandrake 9.1 comes with the latest (at the time of release) ALSA drivers
compiled in. you don't need new drivers, don't listen to anyone that tells
you otherwise.

not familiar with this information - where did you get it ? try running lsmod
and show us the output.

most likley your sound is simply mute. try running alsamixer in the console or
alsamixergui and check that no output sound channel is muted.
