I do 2 things that you might dislike:

1. Guessing. I don't know a definite answer for your problem.
2. Trying to apply my Debian installation to your MDK.

Anyway, what does grep -C 5 /lib/modules/modprobe.conf gives? I suspect
that something with the loading of saa7134 is not compatible with 
module-init-tools even though it was fine for modutils.
