This is with debian unstable. Any ideas if this is solvable?

As for freetype - do you have freetype installed on your system?
In any case, please do contact transgaming, and ask them to fix it. Winex is a 100% proprietary product, and there is nothing anyone in the community can do to fix it. This is unlike CrossOver office, but further details on that will be forthcoming.
