Hi, For the past few month i have problem with the cable connection to the internet. I'm connected using Network adapter (network card...) and on linux !!! currently Debian, before that it was mandrake at home... The modem of the cables is Terayon TJ7151
I have few problems with the connection: 1. A "regular" technition found out the the network itself of the cable is not set right before it enter the structure => low frequncy connection of the cables for everything. 2. Cable modem does not function properly, show light not currectly, for exaple i took out the cable that connected to the socket of the cable network, and the modem keep for 10 minuts show like it connected to that cable. The "Data" light does not function and many times i need to force it to start showing some light (usualy 5 pings for a place in the same time do the job). 3. Many time the computer does not able to do ifconfig up !!! althow the internet support keep on claming them modem does find my network adapter. So I took another computer (laptop) that with PCMCIA network card and connected the modem to it, and the same result where made some of the time. The laptop was bot as MS-WinXP home ! (not by me thanks god) so it's not only a linux problem... (just something for the claim of the "support" i'll be there soon). Now the big and real problem: the "support" of the cable company "hot" (they way too cool to be even warm... i think that havent frost yet): Most technitions told me: "it's your linux, or network adapter or something inside your compute => not our problem => we don't car, what do you want from us ?!" one technition I will call him Z (hist first letter of his name), show a good knowledge of internet protocols... but he didn't know really how to use them right... he says something like "I don't know how linux does it, but in MS-Windows, that is the only OS we support, it using IP (internet protocol) to connect your computer, and the Cable modem have a type of MAC that only windows and us knows, that we can see that you are using the right tool". and few other type of this talk... Damm he needs to know about IETF.. it will make him only feel better ;) Anyway.... I'm still stuck with a non functioning modem, and alot of gloating by the "support" of "you should have used windows and you will not had any problem at all" -> yea right... i looked in the contract with the cable company, it say that i need to have Win95 in order to work with the modem, but when THEY installed it, I was with Mandrake 9.0 and the installers identify it and was glad that i'm not using windows "Only normal people works with Linux or MacOSX. the windows users are not normal, only stupid" (the words of the installer). Do you have an idea what can i do ?
