That's also my own guess. Maybe some other hardware, but memtest86 (is
that what you meant? I don't know memcheck86, and none of the first 10
google results look like a homepage) should have triggered it too.

Did you try knoppix or something like that? If it crashes too you can
be pretty sure it's the hardware, otherwise I'll start checking other
stuff by using a known-good replacement e.g. from knoppix - the kernel,
glibc, etc.
