If you only talk about browsing (via squid) than another option
is to cheat via DNS:
- Each server has its own IP
- One name is mapped to either of them
One package that may give some initial help with this is pdnsd:
- It is a proxy DNS for poor networks (e.g: dialup).
- You can configure it with multiple servers.
- You can configure it to check connectivity via
several mechanims (ping, dns query, user specified program/script, etc.)
So it may be part of the solution.
