Tell me it doesn't get you upset!Tell me it doesn't stinks out of
corruption!
One thing to note:
The article did not mention if students will also recieve a discount. If students don't, then they're ignoring the illegal use issue.
1- Installation kits and license keys will be "automatically" sent to each Reshut.
2- Each Reshut will automatically be charged for the rental of the software each year.
3- The fee is based on number of students enrolled (!) in schools and kindergartens. Nothing to do with actual software installations.
4- If a Reshut wants to opt out, the head of the Reshut must sign a form indicating that no products included in the agreement are installed on any of the school computers.
5- I did not see anything in the documents we recieved indicating that students could benefit from the discounts given to teachers. Teachers and other school staff are entitled to install the whole package on their home computer, and to receive a set of installation CD's for some 40 NIS shipping fee.
Now, I could live with all of the above (I might get an upset stomach, but I'd survive) if only someone could point out where education fits into this School Agreement. But it's all too obvious that no educational concerns were brought into this decision. The only lesson here regarding use of computers in schools is that students don't have to face any challenges or learn anything difficult as long as their PowerPoint presentations zoom in and fade out nicely. Students do not have to understand how their computers or software work, and should certainly not entertain any wierd ideas about actually participating in software development. But they do learn to stay close to the baking pan, so that they, one day, can get a bigger slice of cake like their teachers.
