neglecting the ideological issue completely is, well, not such a good

without the ideology.

When people talk about "ideology" they usually mean FSF style arguments, centered around freedom & user-rights.
Of course these are important, but we should not forget the more "practical", technology-oriented ideological arguments.

The main theme is - free software is important because it has much more potential for advancing technology (and better technology is good for humanity/your country/etc.).
The main reason why science advanced so much in the last few centuries is because scientists PUBLISHed their work, whereas middle ages' alchemists used to accumulate secret knowledge for themselves (sought personal gain and feared competition from other wisemen).

To save space I googled out this site, which correlates well with the rest of the stuff I had to say: Shoulders of Giants <http://www.cyber.com.au/users/conz/shoulders.html>
(bear in mind - Sir Isaac himself was both a scientist and an alchemist - like many modern free-software hackers ;-) ).
