Debian doesn't use the init level as redhat or mandrake (3=console,5=gui).

if you with to get console mode, just remove the xdm/kdm/gdm link from
/etc/rc2.d or change it to start with K instead of a S (kill / start).

If you wish, you can mimic the redhat behavior, but that's not the system
default.

you update-rc script for all these tasks.
