Bootloaders don't trash partitions, they change the bootsector.
Changing the boot sector is one thing (and it actually makes sense, you can
use the Linux bootloader to boot into Windows). But it is *far* from similar
to formatting the other OS's partition and destroying the data on it. There's
absolutely no justification for that except buggy code.
