I guess then it's a matter of personal experience and which packages
you install. For now I'm sticking with DEB, but I certainly be happy
if I could use a distribution which allows one to use both DEB and
RPM.

You've summarized my entire rant rather nicely :-) 
I guess the conclusion is different from what I initially thought -
it's not the fault of KDE or X, it's the fault of the distribution!
Now I just have to find a good distribution... ;-)
