Sounds to me like you could use two X servers running together and not restart X. For the "gaming" configuration you would use a simple desktop that would not get in your way. the *dms can be configured to run two X servers with some extra switches for one of them. I don't know kdm but I know that this is a trivial configuration for gdm.
