I just downloaded the sources to take a look at the manual:

       compact
              Tries  to merge read requests for adjacent sectors into a single
              read request. This drastically reduces load time and  keeps  the
              map file smaller. Using 'compact' is especially recommended when
              booting using a map file on a floppy disk.

Leave yourself a back door in case you mess things up and do
the change. What happened to the "let's learn new stuff" spirit?
GRUB is so much better than what I remember from LILO.
