I want to create a detailed salary database, allowing people to see
what others like themselves are earning. If you've ever looked for a
job or even wanted to know where your current terms stand compared to
the rest of the market, I'm sure you needed something like this.
The usual salary surveys are insufficient. They don't differentiate
between the wide varieties of skill sets: you are either a "C++
programmer" or an "RT engineer". They also cater to the mediocre
and not to highly skilled people.
Asking friends and coworkers is also problematic. Most people don't
have many clone friends with useful salary data. Worse, people don't
like discussing what they earn. There is too potential for
unpleasantness.
To overcome these problems, I propose an anonymous salary
database. You submit your salary data using an ANONYMOUS REMAILER.
No one reading the mail (including me) will know anything about you
except for what you choose you tell. If enough people send detailed
enough data, we will have a database that should allow Linux device
driver developers with 3 years of experience to find out how much
they can expect to earn working at a startup, and many other questions.
This will only work if enough people submit data. So if you like this
idea, please send in your data! And forward this mail to wherever you
think is relevant.

I will also explain how to submit data here, in case people are
worried that statistics are collected on those who access the above web
page. Email your data to [EMAIL PROTECTED] using an anonymous remailer
like https://riot.eu.org/anon/remailer.html. You don't HAVE to say
anything except your salary, but in order for things to be useful please
try to be as detailed as you can comfortably be. If you want, you can
include a secret pass phrase which will not be displayed in the database;
this will allow you update your entry.
