The GPL is perfectly okay with using a modified version of a Free application internally without providing the source to the broad public. As long as you don't distribute your build of the Wallet application with the hardened algorithm to the broad public (since this beats the purpose anyway), the GPL is okay with that.


This same rule allows you to customize a Free web application, put up a *public* web site powered by it and still not release the source. I recall reading that GPLv3 will address this "Services" use case explicitly.
