As I learned in a BOFS in the OLS 2005 conference, the debian-women
project is mainly about doing exactly what you need.

They take newbies who wish to donate by the hand, and match a mentor to
the mentee. And no, they are not all women: there are about 40% women in
the project (compare to about 3% in Debian in general, and to about 40% in
computer science).
