Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. Eventually it turned out that our friend listened to my advise from a few months ago and viruses and ad-wares aren't his problem so a simple boot of his machine allowed me to poke around and cleanup some unused software and such. (BTW - trying to tighten the security of IE rendered it incapable of running windows updates, stupid system) His main problem is apparently cheap hardware, we'll try to take much more advantage of the features of his Gigabyte motherboard.
