There are reasons to run i386 builds of some applications, most often
when they have binary-only plugins which are only built for i386 --
Macromedia Flash Plugin, Win32 multimedia codecs...

Actually, most development packages come in x86-64 variants only. To
turn your x86-64 machine into an i386 "cross-build" machine, you'd have
to fetch packages from the i386 version of the distro. Luckily, they're
compatible.

If he runs a i386 version of Mozilla (to use Macromedia' i386 Flash
Plugin), he'll need libgtk2.0.i386 and fontconfig.i386. While
mozilla.i386 cannot be installed side-by-side with mozilla.x86-64, the
libraries can be, as long as both side-by-side packages are of matching
versions.
