you probably mean www-browser, and not x-window-manager ?

No need to look under /etc/alternatives. If your system is set correctly
(its been a while since I've used Debian, so I'm not sure of the fine
details), you should have /usr/bin/www-browser alternative set up, and
you can check what is uses by running
update-alternatives --display www-browser.

update-alternatives can also be used to configure what web browser you
want.

You may also want to check what thunderbird is setup to use as the
browser - you need to look at its prefs.js file (or using the
preferential extension) - look for "network.protocol-handler.app.http"
to see what is uses. On my system (Mandriva) its set
to /usr/bin/www-browser which isn't an alternative but a script that
checks what WM you are using and what browsers are available and
invokes what it thinks is most appropriate, and you can override that
by setting BROWSER in the environment to what you want to use.
