http://lwn.net/Articles/14776/ http://lwn.net/Articles/14448/ It provides an early userspace environment to do a bunch of things in that used to be done in the kernel - including the initrd handling itself (except for the early, arch-specific stuff). initrd provided an extremely limited "userspace" environment (e.g., no C library, everyting statically linked), but this provides the real thing, including a minimal C library implementation (klibc).
