Hi Oded,
Your mail comes some three years late. Nowadays, no one would take
the pains even to spit on a 20GB HD.
After buying the new computer and installing the software, I
intend to keep the old for awhile for all kind of experiments
that I don't dare to do with the one "for serious use". The
fastest way to do it is to move (or recreate) the stuff from my
present first disk on a 1.2GB bootable disk + on partitions of the
second disk. 
Subsequently I shall donate it. If that will be to a Linux user,
there is no need to change anything. If, on the other hand there
will be need to install Windows, I shall try one of the methods
you suggested (including low-level format, if this is doable for
this disk: I saw once or twice warnings against it. I think that
the subject was discussed on this list as well).
