I just wanted to comment that even if you didn't open the firewall correctly,
that hypothetical reply would not be correct, because your client would be
connecting to other clients (that do not have a firewall) and offering them
the pieces it has.

When I use bittorrent, I never open the firewall to incoming connections,
and I still get traffic in both directions. My download speed suffers
somewhat (I have less peers to choose from - I can only connect to peers
that don't reject incoming connections), but it's usually still good enough.
