I just wanted to comment that even if you didn't open the firewall correctly, that hypothetical reply would not be correct, because your client would be connecting to other clients (that do not have a firewall) and offering them the pieces it has. When I use bittorrent, I never open the firewall to incoming connections, and I still get traffic in both directions.
