Did the same number get reported for blocks being read and for blocks
being written?

If Didi's hypothesis is correct, then those numbers would be different.
In this case: does anyone know how to direct dd to write zeroes (or
garbage) in lieu of bad sectors rather than suppress writing them
altogether?

The answer which I expected to this question was to be obtained by
actually running fdisk on those hard disks, and inserting its output
into your E-mail message.

But this requires a third hard disk or LiveCD which has a functioning
Linux (or a *BSD) system with fdisk.
