I've tested three drives:
*) an LG CD-Writer + DVD-ROM: couldn't identify that the region 1 dvd
I've put into it is actually a DVD, but it could be a problem with my
computer, which is very old, or with my distro which is an outdated
Mandriva.
*) a NEC CD-Writer + DVD-ROM: mplayer identified the disc as a dvd,
worked on it a long time and finally the computer stopped responding and
I had to reboot it.
*) LG slim CD-Writer + DVD-ROM that is bundled in the IBM Thinkpad T43:
plays both region 1 and 2 DVDs w/o a problem.
I think that LGs, specifically those that are a writer combo, would
work, and its a notion I've seen around on the web as well, but no
guarantees :-)
