What does PCMCIA has to do with this?
Exactly my question in relation to WebDAV.
WebDAV is merely a network protocol, not a solution. It's on the same
level as FTP. While indeed a WebDAV server can be accessed through a
file system interface, the underlying data store of a WebDAV server
isn't something specified by the WebDAV protocol. WebDAV is *not* a
standard for storing ACLs and user credentials on disk. It's not a file
system. WebDAV servers such as Subversion, Zope and Microsoft SharePoint
show the contents of their databases, nothing corresponding to disk files.
there are numerous web-based applications to allow you to configure
their webdav volume
to your heart's content.
There's no WebDAV "volume", since it's not a file system.
What I read about SharePoint on Wikipedia is that it is a
"collaborative portal system" and sounds like what WebDAV can give you
too.
SharePoint is a server which manages documents, user credentials and
ACLs, and among other options, allows you to access those documents
through a WebDAV interface.
By the way, the management of the credentials and permissions is done
through its web application. WebDAV has no permission-management commands.
