I was just passing on what they said back when the distro made its big splash, and what I think they repeated in the promos for the current release.
The actual distro includes a rather small amount of packages in the standard repositories. These are the packages that are "officially supported". The reason Ubuntu has a huge number of packages is because of the "Universe" repository, which is actually taken verbatim from Debian Sid.
That's why I said that the kind of thinking of "I can support Ubuntu because I can support Debian" is not recommended - many things that "just work" in Debian, have to be done differently or won't work at all on Ubuntu. This "Universe" repository, from my old experience, is far from being complete and well integrated as its Debian equivalent. --Amos PS I wonder whether the recent departure of Jeff Wogh from Canonical signifies anything beyond the official reason given that he wants to get back to his roots at Gnome. As far as I'm aware he was one of the main figures in Canonical. ================================================================= To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
