I also noticed now the following in X.org.log happend before. :
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Generic Keyboard" (type: KEYBOARD)
(WW) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

Interestingly enough, I still get this message in Kubuntu, but the
language switching works.

FWIW, my HP pavilion ze5700 lacks a scroll-lock led. I thus use the caps
lock led, and the caps-lock key to toggle.

I should be so luck. The 3110 does not have any key LEDs.... But, the
xfce keyboard indicator is sufficient.
