I've seen many an MP3 player, in all shapes, forms and colors and all
work perfectly on Linux: all but the most complicated ones looks like a
USB mass storage device (which they are) and are automatically
identified and mounted by modern distros. My girlfriend currently
carries something which is called "IKo classic" from "Top technologies"
which is a bit wider then a pack of gums, and comes at 512MB for 190 NIS
and with a 3 year warranty. Like all others I've seen, mounting it was
as easy as sticking it into the USB port on the computer and waiting for
file browser window to pop-up. It does take an AAA battery though. May
similar models can be found on any store in the country, from computer
stores through photo shops (this one was actually bought at "foto shop")
to super markets (Shupersal Big stores usually have a computer section,
but HomeCenter carries these as well).
This is the device: http://zap.co.il/model.asp?model_id=150356 , but
going to zap.co.il, and filtering for MP3 players, under 190 NIS, all of
the devices you'll see would probably work for you, and I had personal
experience with most of them.

Actually, the only USB storage device I've see that wasn't plug-and-play
was a U3 micro cruiser DoK which for some weird reason detects as
CD-recorder with two partitions, and I can't get any of which to mount.
