too late now. with hundreds of millions of SMTP servers it's going to be
very hard to change one of the basic protocols of the Internet. If there
was a better offering from anyone, believe me, the jump would have been
made :-/


Actually there were a few atempts to replace SMTP. Possibly the most notable
one is DJB's Internet Mail 2000 (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Mail_2000).

But as you said - so far it looks like it's too late and anything that will
be suggested in the future will have to accomodate for SMTP servers at least
for a very long transitional period, which will keep this "back door" always
open at least up to a degree :-(.
