Hi list, I got a strange email today, right after releasing a new version of rsyncrypto. Here it is, links mangled (I'll explain why in a sec): > Hello, > > Your product "Rsyncrypto 1.04" has been tested by the Softpedia labs and > found to be > completely clean of adware/spyware components. > > We are impressed with the quality of your product and encourage you to keep > this high standards in the future. > > To assure our visitors that "Rsyncrypto 1.04" is clean, we have granted it > with the > "100% FREE" Softpedia award. Truth be told, I smell a rat. I googled them up (looked for "softpedia spam"), and came up with either an extremely high google rank, or an extremely low buzz about them. In other words, all I found in google was links to their own site for the first few pages. I did find some references [1] where people actually issued press releases with this award! I emailed them asking what the review process is, what the skill set is for the people doing the review and how long the review took place. I'll keep you posted on what/if they answer. In the mean while, am I a cynical SOB, or are they just boosting their own traffic and page rank (the reason I mangled the links) by awarding, well, awards with no content to them?
